Walking Diary 2026

THE BURN BRIDGE ASCENT - Thursday 8th January

Six brave walkers arrived at the car park of the now closed Black Swan pub in the village of Burn Bridge, near Harrogate.  They were all anxious to attempt the ascent of the infamous 'Almscliffe Crag', renowned to be one of the most difficult climbs in Yorkshire

The walkers had to endure miles of footpaths to reach the foothills, with frozen ground conditions

The ascent proved tiring for the walkers, but they continued with great fortitude.

SUCCESS - Where the walkers enjoyed the views and celebrated with Mar Bar Crispies

The descent was carefully negotiated due to the frozen rocks, but no disasters occurred.   The walkers were pleased with their achievement, and Jim contacted the media to release the news of the successful ascent.

Immediately the walkers hurried to the 'Square & Compass' in the nearby village of North Rigton, where they celebrated their successes with ale, steak sandwiches and chips (except Tom).

Their journey back took them across just one bridge, which they celebrated in the traditional way.
The walkers were pleased with their performance

THE DANGEROUS SIDE OF PENHILL - Thursday 12th February

Only four intrepid walkers braved the Yorkshire Dales weather ready to conquer the notoriously dangerous side of Penhill.

They eagerly set off from the lay-by just outside West Witton searching for bridges that they knew were very scarce on their route.

Celebrating their first triumph the walkers gathered for the customary photo

The walkers then commenced their first major climb out of West Witton admiring the views of Wensleydale (in the mist) below them.

Ready for their refreshment stop they suddenly realised that they had no Mars Bar Crispies.
DISASTER!!  Colin however came to their rescue producing Barbara’s alternative. Corn Flake Biscuits. These were quickly devoured, regaining their strength.

The walkers continued their search for bridges only to find what was classified as an “inverted submerged bridge”

Onwards and upwards the rejuvenated walkers trudged.    Soon they came across another very rare bridge. “A Siamese Culvert”. The delight at this find can be seen on the walkers faces!

Satisfied with their momentous finds the happy walkers quickly found the Fox Inn to celebrate in the tradition way.

The happy walkers returned to their car looking forward to next months twaddle.

RIPON WALK - Thursday 12th March

An excellent turnout of 8 brave walkers paraded in front of Ripon Cathedral before setting off in search of adventure and bridges.   It was noted that wisely Ed and Paul M chose to take a shorter route at the 2 mile point, in order to lessen the strain and pre-warn the lunch venue.

Soon a plethora of bridges were located

Elevensis were taken after the group split at the 2 mile point.   Regaining their strength with Mars Bar Crispies.

The walkers were amazed to find giant ornamental lakes within Studley Royal as they continued their search for bridges

SUCCESS - A super surplus of bridges

Meanwhile the alternative route walkers!!!!

The alternative route walkers found 'The Water Rat' to their liking and settled down to testing their ales, whilst awaiting the others.

A feast of mainly fish finger sandwiches were consumed by the hungry walkers, with their ale, as they watched the rain falling outside.

All agreed that this could not be called a bridge!!

Another successful walk completed, after only a short stroll after lunch in the rain
